CATALOG - Charm Crawford - Walker & Pratt
Walker & Pratt Mfg. Co. Manufacturers 31-35 Union St., Boston.
REMOVABLE RAILS This range is fitted with an entirely novel kind of. detachable nickel-plated guardrails, which are easily lifted off for cleaning, or when blacking the range. Making these nickeled rails detachable is a new idea, which will be appreciated by every good housekeeper. In ordinary ranges the nickeled bands are held fast in place by bolts; they are not easily cleaned because they cannot be lifted off. In the Charm Crawford the nickeled guardrails are not closely fitted to the edges of the range, but have an open space behind them; so that they are cooled by free circulation of air. Crawford ranges are the only stoves, which have these desirable improvements.
THE CRAWFORD HEAT INDICATOR Which is furnished free with this range, shows the exact heat of the oven. Guessing the oven heat is not necessary. The indicator is located in the oven door, at convenient height to be easily seen. It is larger, and therefore plainer, than the ordinary style of oven thermometer. The engraving is about half size.
THE OVEN BACK Is triple; one thickness of tin, one of asbestos and one of cast iron. This improves the baking and saves coal; it also prevents waste of heat. The oven is "illuminated" by the tin lining. With Crawford "conveniences, half the worry and trouble of cooking is saved.

The mantel of this range has a full nickeled top surface; dishes placed upon it do not soil the snowiest table linen. All Crawford nickeled guardrails, shelves and trimmings are plated and finished at the Crawford factory. The nickel work is of very superior and lasting quality. The curved bow edges (patented) give the range a very handsome and finished appearance. The ornament is somewhat simpler than usually seen; the raised scrollwork is especially designed for ease of keeping clean. The guardrails removable for cleaning, and the broad plain surfaces, will be appreciated in every tidy kitchen.
The convenient broiler door is wide and high. The firebox is of ample depth and width, suited for quick baking, rapid heating of hot water supply, and keeping fire over night without difficulty. Crawford Ranges work well at any hour of the day or night.
A SINGLE DAMPER Controls the fire and oven. This single damper, or regulator, is moved by a knob, sliding in a groove in the top of the stove at the left of the smoke pipe. The kindling position is marked KINDLE. The baking position is marked BAKE. The position for checking the fire is marked CHECK. Nothing could be more easy or simple. Mistakes about dampers are entirely avoided. There is only one damper to think of. Other ranges have two dampers for the same purpose, which is confusing and sometimes spoils the baking. This new damper is applied only to Crawford Ranges.
A SIMMERING COVER Is furnished free with each range. This cover may be used in any location on the' top of the stove. It will be found very useful for many kinds of cooking which require a slow heat. It may be readily lifted off, if the entire top of the range is required for rapid cooking. This illustration shows the manner in which all the nickeled guardrails may be instantly detached if desired; in blacking the range this is a great convenience. This construction is found only in Crawford Ranges. Crawford Ranges have many useful improvements, of great assistance in the daily housework.
This engraving shows the Charm Crawford with the doors open, to make its construction as clear as possible. The oven rack is adjustable at two heights; useful when the oven is crowded on baking day. The oven top is plastered, also the bottom of the lower flue beneath the oven; this is to save coal and make the oven better for baking. The upper flue is made with cup joint division to prevent heat leakage, and make the range quick working. Only Crawford Ranges have this new and necessary improvement.
This It is easy to reach every part of the· flues, to remove soot, without special tools and without soiling the hands. The removable panel in the oven gives access to the lower flues. The oven bottom, with this separate panel, does not warp; it is always flat and level. The front lining clamp is protected from the fire. It is therefore durable -lasts as long as the range-does not burn off and let the linings fall into the fire. In design, material, fit, finish and operation, Crawford Ranges are unsurpassed. Grates This It is easy The latest improved Crawford Dockash Grate is furnished with this range. The fire is cleared by a half revolution of the handle. The cogwheels are outside the firebox, protected from heat and dust.
The two bars of this improved dockash grate are of the same pattern; no troublesome rights and lefts. Should either bar become worn in use, it is easily replaced in a moment and without sending for the stove man. In replacing grate bars it is not necessary to remove the grate rest, linings, waterfront or coil. These grates are very durable, being made of the same high-grade iron as the rest of the range. Some housekeepers prefer the triple grate, which is furnished if desired. It is very simple and easily renewed. The old-fashioned one-piece grate is also furnished. All these grates, dockash, triple or plain, fit the regular grate rest of the range. To change from one style of grate to another, it is not necessary to disturb the grate rest, linings, waterfront, coil, or any firebox parts.
This elevated hot closet is very convenient. A hinged shield of polished sheet-iron closes the front. The double flues of Crawford ranges make evenly heated ovens with little fuel. Crawford ovens are suitable for the most exacting cooking. The fire and oven heat can be regulated to a nicety; the single damper makes this easy. All Crawford ovens are ventilated, and cooking odors conveyed to the chimney. The T-shaped centerpiece, above the fire, is made in halves for durability. No ranges require so little repairs as "Crawfords "; they successfully stand the test of daily use. Special linings for burning wood are furnished. The larger sizes burn wood 26 inches long. Crawford Ranges are made in the finest stove factory in the world. They are used with perfect satisfaction by thousands of New England housekeepers.
The reservoir has a lining of tinned copper, readily removed for cleaning. The water is heated during the regular cooking, without interfering with the use of the oven. This improvement is not found in other ranges. To heat water very fast, when the oven is not in use, the reservoir damper is opened and the smoke then passes around the copper lining. For moderate hot water supply, however, the damper is kept closed. The copper lining does not then become sooty on the outside, and may without soiling the hands be lifted out for washing. Powerful waterfronts and coils are furnished. Every range is carefully inspected, and fitted with heat indicator, detachable guard-rails, single damper, ample oven, simmering-cover, reducing- ring cover; nickel-plated adjustable oven rack, ventilated oven, embossed tin oven door lining, oven door pedal, dockash grate (unless other style is preferred), cup joint top flue, plastered top and bottom flues, protected front lining-clamp, large ash pan, nickeled towel dryer, malleable nickeled lifter and shaker. The complete assortment of “Crawford” Ranges. Stoves, Furnaces, Steam and Hot Water Heaters, are unequalled.

Originality That Counts For Something There are two classes of people in the world: People who originate, and People who copy. The originators do things, The copiers "do" people. The originators invent, design, create, The copiers trail along behind with something which "claim" is "just as good." The Success of the Kalamazoo Stove Company is due to the fact that our Mr William Thompson, Vice President and general manager is admittedly, one of the most original and progressive stove men in the united states. Consequently every Kalamazoo Stove and Range has about it and embodied in it, an ORIGINALITY and INDIVIDUALITY not often found in a stove or range. His more than 30 years of experience in every department of the stove business, enables him first, to know and appreciate what is needed to make a good stove or range, and second, to know how to meet that need. Consequently it has never been necessary for him to get together a lot of stoves of "other makes", and copy one part from this and one from that- making a "composite" stove that has no originality of design or purpose. He has never had to "steal the other fellows thunder" either in designing and making a stove or range, or in designing an economical selling plan. His originality, backed by his varied experience, has made him a specialist - a stove expert who does not have to depend apon other mens knowledge. We do not claim that we have "cornered" all the intelligence and experience of the stove industry. Mr Thompson is not the only reliable and responsible stove man in the country. But other reputable manufacturers are not trying to trade on the kalamazoo's reputation. They are not trying to imitate our selling plan. They do not attempt to offer you the same opportunities of saving money by buying direct from the factory that we offer you. Since the Kalamazoo Stove Company inaugurated its "A KALAMAZOO DIRECT TO YOU" selling plan, numerous imitators have sprung up. The most of them are simply mail order dealers who buy their stoves and ranges in job lots, always placing their orders wherever they can buy the cheapest - from one foundry this year and from another foundry the next year. But they attempt to deceive you by pretending to be actual manufacturers. Even if some of these new concerns do manufacture a few stoves or ranges, what do they make? Simply a cheep copy of some other line, with only enough change to keep the inexperienced from recognizing it. They have neither originality, experience, or reputation. You may possibly be solicited to buy from these inexperienced companies and pretend manufacturers. It is to your advantage to know of whom you are buying - to know that you are getting a stove or range built on original, scientific lines - a stove or range that is designed and built by an experienced stove expert and not purchased in job lots - a stove or range with a man of experience, reputation, and expert skill behind it - a stove or range that is not excelled by any in the world, and still is sold to you at a reasonable price - much below what you should have to pay a local dealer. That is exactly what you get when you buy "A KALAMAZOO DIRECT TO YOU". One of the best at the lowest possible price. Respectfully yours, |

It is a stove of extremely handsome design and strong, durable construction. It is manufactured and sold on the Kalamazoo plan, made in our own factory of the best procurablematerials, rigidly inspected, fully guaranteed and shipped directly to the user on 360 days approval at lowest factory prices. It is as nearly perfect as it is possible to make a stove of this kind. It has our $20,000 bank bond back of it. We do not call this an "air tight" heater, although many manufacturers are selling stoves of similar construction under that name. We guarantee, however, that the Kalamazoo Gem is as nearly air tight as any stove of like construction can be made. It is economical in fuel, will take an extremely large stick of wood and will hold fire for many hours.

Design - The design is extremely pleasing, as will be noted from the illustration. The handsome Rococo pattern, the heavy carving and the pleasing patterns set off with beautiful nickel trimmings, all combine to make an extremely attractive and ornamental heater. Workmanship and Material The Kalamazoo Gem is an all cast iron stove and, like all products from our factory, is made from the highest grade materials. Only the best selected pig iron is used in it's construction; the parts are perfectly fitted and carefully mounted and we fully guarantee it to be up to the well-known Kalamazoo standard in every way. Main Body of the stove is made in the simpleset manner and without rods. The castings are bolted together and it will last a lifetime with ordinary care. The main back and front are cut in two pieces to prevent cracking by fire, and the lower section of the back is further protected by an inside lining. Heavy Reinforced Bottom is mounted in one solid piece and is reinforced in such a manner that it is almost indestructable, is guaranteed against fire crack or warping. The Fire Door is 9.5 x 16 inches in size; it swings to the right and it makes it possible to burn very large chunks, so that it is not necessary to cut the wood so small. The door being extra large, makes it easy to remove large ashes, and it is equipped with a large nickel grip turnkey which can be opened with a poker. A loose smoke door prevents the smoke from entering the room when putting in fuel. The Mica Front is amply large so that the cheerful glow of the large burning wood fire is reflected in the room in which the stove stands. It is a very pleasant feature not usually found in wood stoves now on the market. Heavy Nickel Footrail and name place cover the entire front base of the stove and adds greatly to its appearance and is found a great convenience in extremely cold weather, as it affords a place to rest the feet at a convenient height. Heavy, Large Nickel Scew Draft Damper is valve seated and with it the fire can be easily controlled, as it makes an air tight joint. Inside is fitted a large spark arrester or guard, making it absolutely safe; there is no danger of sparks flying into the room. Nickel Screw Draft Check Damper at the rear, located near the pipe collar, makes it possible to hold fire under absolute control and prevents creosoting in the pipe. Main Top and lids are directly under the ornimental swing cover, the top surface is large and roomy, and we have made this high grade Kalamazoo Gem with two sever-inch griddle covers so that the stove can be used for cooking purposes if the occasion should arise. The Swing Cover is extra large and is made of solid cast stove plate highly carved and ornimented with extremely pleasing in design and properly proportioned. It swings to the left so that the top surface may be utilized. The Urn is made of strong metal bolted together in such a menner as to make it lasting and durrable; it is much better than the soft metal and spun brass urns used by other manufacturers. The Swing Top is surmounted by a handsome nickeled urn of good weight and well plated. There is a removable lid beneath the swing top. The pipe collar is located just back of the swing cover in the main top. Beside the pipe collar is a check damper which aids in controlling the fire. Nickeled Wings Handsome, heavily carved and nickel-plated wings flank the front of the stove on both sides, giving it the finished appearance of a much more expensive stove Foot-rails Three heavily nickel-plated and handsomely carved foot-rails of graceful design are attached to the middle ring at the top of the fire-pot; they are so placed that the fire-pot is partially concealed. |
